Explore The Cape Henry Memorial Park

The Hampton Roads area has a rich history and played a major part in the foundation of our country. There are many places to visit near Waypoint Apartments to learn more about this historical past –  one of them is Cape Henry Memorial Park. Admiral Comte deGrasse played a pivotal role in a battle that helped to secure American Independence. The commander of the French fleet sent support to the American forces, causing the British to be unsuccessful in their cause. You can see the bronze statue erected in honor of the Admiral in the park.

In 1607, the English Colonists erected a wooden cross, commemorating their new homeland, and named it Cape Henry. The original cross no longer exists, but visitors of the park can enjoy the one built in its honor by the by the National Society of Daughters of the American Colonists.

One of the most beautiful views on the Cape Henry Memorial Park landscape are the Cape Henry Lighthouses, built in 1792 and 1881. The Confederate forces damaged them during the Civil War but they were later restored. One of the lighthouses is still operational and open to visitors of the park. Learn more about the life of a lighthouse keeper, and climb to the top to enjoy the views.
