An easy drive from Hampton Roads is a museum that dates back to 1933.
We’re talking about the Chrysler Museum of Art, and its collection includes more than thirty thousand works that range in age from ancient Europe to modern times.
Rene Lalique: Enchanted by Glass (on display through January 21, 2018)
Rene Lalique is known as one of the most influential designers of the 20th century as he combined artistry and industrialization to bring luxury to the masses. He opened his Parisian shop in 1885, and within five years, it was a favorite among social elites. Rene used glass in his jewelry, and his beautifully crafted perfume bottles became so popular, that he had to start mass-producing them in a factory in 1909. This exhibit displays one of his patent applications, historic images, and more.
In the Box – Elena Damiani’s Dust Tail (February 4, 2018)
Elena Damiani is a contemporary artist whose works incorporate geography, geology, archaeology, cartography, and astronomy to re-interpret the world around us. This is her first exhibition in the Southeast United States, and it highlights her latest work called Dust Tail. The museum states that it overlays numerous images of comets’ blazing dust tails into a simulating collage printed on silk chiffon.
Picturing Innovation: The First 100 Years at NASA Langley (on display through March 18, 2018)
To celebrate the 100th anniversary of the NASA Langley Research Center in Hampton, the museum is displaying one hundred images that show a variety of Langley’s pioneering achievements. They include pilots testing experimental planes and astronauts preparing to take their first steps on the moon.
