Waypoint Apartments is just a quick trip away from historic theaters and a large performing arts center. No matter what type of performance you’re looking for, the theaters in Hampton Roads are perfect for your date night or friendly get-together. Visit these three local favorites:

The American Theatre

The American Theatre is an intimate venue with a full season of scheduled events. Enjoy performances ranging from music to dance and theater. The theater opened in 1908 with a mission to provide “clean, wholesome amusement,” and movies were just ten cents on Saturday nights. Today, the theater hosts fifty events every year. You can also attend scheduled programs and classes so you can learn more about the performing arts.

L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center

The L. Douglas Wilder Performing Arts Center is part of Norfolk State University and it’s one of the area’s top concert halls. This center focuses on promoting the community’s diverse art scene. It’s a popular local hangout for exciting evenings of music and theater, too. The center seats more than a thousand patrons, and it has a full theatrical stage, outstanding acoustics, and an ornate foyer.

Wells Theatre

The Wells Theatre showcases Beaux Arts theater architecture from the turn of the 20th century. It was one of several vaudeville theaters owned by Jake and Otto Wells. Many of the country’s leading performers entertained here, including Fred Astaire and Will Rogers. A few years after the theater opened, Jake Wells added a movie screen and a projector; this made the theater one of the most impressive first-run movie houses in the region. Today, the theater is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It attracts artists from Broadway and both the film and television industries — visit the theater for a fun mix of history and modern art.
